Wireless Tooth Tattoo Can Detect Bad Bacteria
A removable wireless sensor that adheres to the tooth enamel can be used to detect trace amounts of harmful bacteria. The researchers at Princeton University say that the graphene, silk, and gold based sensor appears as a temporary tattoo and can be used detect and treat diseases.
The sensor can be interfaced with a variety of biomaterials to produce a real time wireless response. The graphene can be configured appropriately to detect viruses.
The use of graphene as a biocompatible base is considered a major medical and technological advancement. The challenges faced are getting a small enough antenna to be used with human teeth and discovering how well the sensor will withstand the conditions in the mouth.
