These Piercings Present Health Risks

Seems like a great fashion statement. But piercing your gums, cheeks, tongue, and lips may present risks to your oral health. The Oral Health Foundation says that these piercings:

  1. May interfere with chewing, speech, and swallowing.
  2. Biting and playing with the piercings can cause chipping, cracking and other forms of damage to the teeth.
  3. May cause infection to the open wound since the mouth contains a large amount of bacteria.
  4. The act of piercing in itself may present dangers such as numbness of the tongue, blood loss, high risk of hepatitis B and HIV, and excessive bleeding.
  5. People are advised to research the risks of oral piercings if they wish to get a piercing.
