These Piercings Present Health Risks
Seems like a great fashion statement. But piercing your gums, cheeks, tongue, and lips may present risks to your oral health. The Oral Health Foundation says that these piercings:
- May interfere with chewing, speech, and swallowing.
- Biting and playing with the piercings can cause chipping, cracking and other forms of damage to the teeth.
- May cause infection to the open wound since the mouth contains a large amount of bacteria.
- The act of piercing in itself may present dangers such as numbness of the tongue, blood loss, high risk of hepatitis B and HIV, and excessive bleeding.
- People are advised to research the risks of oral piercings if they wish to get a piercing.
