Chewing Gum to Prevent Cavities
Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals can contribute to prevention of tooth decay. However, chewing sugarless gum should not replace flossing and brushing.
The process of chewing sugarless gum helps to increase the flow of saliva to wash away food debris left in between the teeth. Additionally, saliva neutralizes acid produced by bacteria in the mouth as well as having disease-fighting properties.
The flow of saliva will bring with it more calcium and more phosphate that serve to strengthen tooth enamel. Regular brushing and flossing is recommended. Brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride containing toothpaste.
