Dentures
What are dentures?
Dentures are a removable prosthesis that replace missing teeth. Every denture is unique and requires the skill and judgement of the dentist to produce.
Dentures are available in two main forms:
- Full dentures, which replace all your natural teeth.
- Partial dentures which replace missing teeth, where one or more of your natural teeth remain.
Is everyone with missing teeth suitable for dentures?
No – everyone with missing teeth may not be suitable. This is a clinical decision and is based on the dentists assessment of your mouth. Each case is different and the dentist will be happy to discuss this option or other possible options with you.
Who makes them?
All the clinical stages and decisions are made by the dentist who writes a prescription and sends it to the dental lab, along with an impression of your mouth. From these, the dentures are constructed by skilled technicians.
What do dentures feel like?
If you’ve never had dentures it may feel quite strange for the first week or so, especially if there was a gap where your teeth previously were. Some dentures cover most or all of the roof of your mouth, which can alter taste sensation as there are a few small taste buds on the roof of your mouth. This is perfectly normal and should not alter taste too much as most taste perception is on the tongue.
